Research Fellow in Bioengineering and Thoracic Surgery

We are currently recruiting applicants for a fully funded two-year research position starting July 1, 2020 in Bioengineering and Thoracic Surgery.

Our lab focuses on novel bioengineering techniques for whole organ regeneration (lung, liver and heart), recovery, extracorporeal organ support and artificial lung development. The fellow will be expected to take a lead role in developing and performing large animal surgical experiments. Applicants should have completed at least 2 years of surgical residency and will be expected to commit to 2 years of research in the lab.

Research involves large animal models of disease and surgery as well as the regeneration of rejected human organs. The position is based at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in the Department of Surgical Sciences, but the laboratory also works in collaboration with Dr. Vunjak-Novakovic at Columbia University and Dr. Keith Cook at Carnegie Mellon University in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Previous surgical residents have been instrumental to this group and have been extremely productive, successful academically and gone onto secure highly coveted clinical fellowships. They have received research awards, published in top journals - including Nature Biomedical Engineering, Nature Communications, JHLT, and JTCVS - and have presented at national and international conferences.
