Surgical Education Research Fellowship

The Departments of Surgery of the Boston Medical Center and the VA Boston Healthcare System, are currently seeking a candidate for our VA Boston Surgical Education Research fellowship to start by September 1, 2023.

This is a one-year (possibly to be extended for a second year), fully funded position focused on surgical education research and is academically affiliated with the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine.

There would be three components of the fellowship:

  1. The research component (80%) with opportunities to work on ongoing projects and develop new interventions focused on:
    • Using Video Based Assessments to objectively measure surgical technique and decision making with structured frameworks like OSATS, GOALS, GEARS, and NOTSS
    • Surgical ergonomics assessment and interventions
    • Increasing operative autonomy of residents
    • Surgical mentoring and coaching
    • Inter-professional education
    • Quality improvement in education
    • Leadership development
  2. The curriculum component (10%):
    • Attending the education sessions that are part of the VA Boston Healthcare System Health Professions Education,
    • Evaluation and Research (HPEER) program.
  3. Clinical component (optional, 10%):
    • For interested and qualified candidates, we can develop a personalized development plan to include clinical activities and operative time to help maintain and advance the technical and non-technical skills during the research year(s).

Our team's work has been published in numerous journals and presented in regional and national conferences. Our candidate will be mentored by surgical faculty members that are affiliated with the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and the Harvard Medical School.

Prerequisites:

This position requires a 1-2 years commitment. Potential applicants must have completed a medical degree, and preferably 2-3 years of General Surgery residency training.
