Hematopathology Fellowship

Hematopathology Fellowship

This one-year, ACGME-accredited program provides an opportunity to work with a team of fully subspecialized hematopathologists, alongside other world-renowned colleagues in hematology/oncology at URMC and the Wilmot Cancer Institute.

  • Begun in 2007, we’ve trained more than a dozen highly successful graduates who have gone on to careers in academics, private practice, and industry. Our philosophy is to optimize the learning environment by giving trainees complete responsibility for diagnostic workup in a supportive environment where attending faculty are immediately on-hand and/or at the microscope, and their doors are always open.
  • This works wonderfully for trainee education and continuity of patient care. We expect the fellows to "take ownership' of the hematopathology service: it is theirs to shape for a year. There are rotating students and residents, and the fellow functions as the chief resident for this team. Working within a large academic referral center that is simultaneously a general hospital, this program offers training in all aspects of diagnostic hematopathology.
  • While the focus is on morphologic based diagnosis of lymphomas and leukemias, our model of diagnostic practice is holistic with all flow cytometry, molecular, cytogenetic and other results integrated into a single diagnostic report for which the fellow is responsible. We provide ample opportunities and support for academic projects if trainees want to pursue these.
