The Department of Cardiac Surgery is seeking candidates for a one-year non-ACGME clinical fellowship in thoracic transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. Our Adult Heart Transplant Program has performed more transplants over the past five years than any other center in the United States. In 2022 we performed 117 adult heart transplants and the mechanical circulatory support service implants over 100 mechanical circulatory assist devices per year.
The clinical fellow will be responsible for the preoperative evaluation, implantation and postoperative care of patients with end-stage heart and lung disease. Furthermore, the fellow will participate in the procurement of the organs, including the use of the organ care system (the “heart in a box”). The service is active with the clinical fellow taking the lead role in ECMO cannulation as well as thoracic organ implantation. Funding will be available for participation in the annual ISHLT meeting and presentation of clinical research.
