Surgical Pathology Fellowship

Surgical pathology fellowship at Loyola University Medical Center is a one-year program available to qualified, licensed AP or AP/CP board-eligible/certified pathologists with 2 positions available annually. Although the program is non-ACGME accredited, all ACGME regulations regarding duty hour limits, rest, assessment, evaluation and feedback are followed under the supervision of the GME office. The fellowship is based in the Department of Pathology with an ongoing accredited AP/CP pathology residency program as well as fellowships in dermatopathology, hematopathology and cytopathology.

Our program offers a unique opportunity for advanced training in surgical pathology as well as real life practical experience. Thus, during the final 2 months of the Fellowship, our Surgical Pathology Fellows function as junior faculty with attending sign-out privileges. This includes signing out the final pathology reports as well as frozen section coverage. This introduction into real life practice is offered in a friendly and caring environment where Fellows are encouraged and have ample opportunities to consult with senior faculty and where the load of service work is not overwhelming.
