General Surgery Residency - Categorical Position

The General Surgery residency program at Huntington Hospital, a 619-bed not-for-profit community hospital, includes a diverse curriculum emphasizing clinical excellence.

General surgery residents receive an individualized learning experience and benefit from close interaction with our teaching staff.

  • Participation in the operating room begins at an early level, under direct supervision, providing a rigorous yet exciting learning experience.
  • Surgery residents have a complete clinical experience, performing a majority of the procedures on the teaching service. Huntington Hospital performs more than twelve thousand operations annually.
  • All trauma service patients are managed from admission in the emergency room, throughout hospitalization and into the outpatient clinic. Huntington Hospital is a Level II Trauma Center for the County of Los Angeles and sees approximately 1300 major trauma patients per year.\

The general surgery residency program is under the direction of Steven G. Katz, MD, program director.

Many of our teaching faculty hold clinical faculty appointments at Keck School of Medicine. Our residents are actively involved in research with annual presentations and there is regular activity at national and local conferences. Teaching conferences are held weekly and our faculty is dedicated to successful training of our future surgeons, as evidenced by our excellent board passage rate.
