Public Psychiatry Fellowship

The Public Psychiatry Fellowship of New York State Psychiatric Institute at Columbia University Medical Center is in the Division of Behavioral Health Services and Policy Research. It is a one-year training program for psychiatrists who have completed accredited psychiatric residency training and who plan to devote their careers to working with people who have complex health needs and underserved populations who receive health care in the public sector.

The fellows can choose to be part of the general track, or sign up for a speciality track working on policy in the office of the CMO for OMH, global mental health, or the research track.

Prerequisites:

  • Graduated from accredited psychiatry residency training programs
  • A NYS license before the start of the academic year (July 1st)
  • Demonstrated interest in public mental health issues, especially those concerned with achieving better care for poor and otherwise disadvantaged adults and children with serious mental illness
  • Interest and ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated psychiatric leadership, internal program evaluation and other academic endeavors
  • J1 and H1B visas will be considered on a case by case basis

Interviews for the job sites are usually from December to February but fellows are encouraged to begin this process as soon as they are accepted into the fellowship.
