The epidemiology of acute kidney injury (AKI) in the pediatric population has shifted. Rather than primary kidney disease, nephrologists increasingly encounter AKI as a secondary effect of systemic illness and its treatment.
Children in this situation often have significant complicating factors; their initial illness may be the result of solid organ or bone marrow transplantation, sepsis or multiorgan system dysfunction. Caring for these patients requires effective collaboration between pediatric nephrologists and intensive care clinicians.
