Innovation and Design Fellowship

The Innovation and Design Fellowship trains fellows in how to think, conceptualize, and achieve healthcare improvement through advances in technology, systems change, digital applications, and much more.

The Fellowship currculum is based on three pillars:

  • Biodesign
  • Design Thinking
  • Digital Health

Fellows may also augment study with activities in additional focus areas.

The fellow will learn to:

  • Understand and apply biodesign and design thinking processes to identify significant unmet health needs
  • Invent / evaluate new technologies and innovative solutions
  • Explore med tech innovation as a potential career pathway
  • Develop strategies for assessing and managing the risks and challenges unique to med tech innovation
  • Hone critical thinking to understand the evolving digital health industry
  • Teach design thinking process to lay people and healthcare providers

Prerequisites:

  • Board-eligible or board-certified emergency medicine physician from 4 year ACGME-accredited emergency medicine residency programs or 3 year ACGME EM programs with minimum 1 year post-graduate experience
  • Have demonstrated an interest in health design, med tech, clinical operations, and digital health initiatives.
  • Proven professionalism and ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team are required.
  • Previous MBA or other graduate degree not required but valued.
  • Must be eligible for an unrestricted CA medical license.

  • Cover Letter - 500 words or less
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation from clinicians you have collaborated with within the past 2 years. These letters should provide specific examples of your principal strengths and how your performance and skills compare with those of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles.
  • 1 Letter of Recommendation from a non-clinician describing your work in a collaborative project. This letter should be brief - 250 words or less - and tell a story about your work.
