The Department of Pathology offers a one-year non-ACGME accredited fellowship position in GI, hepatobiliary and pancreatic pathology. The fellowship provides comprehensive training in interpretation of endoscopic, liver and pancreatobiliary biopsies and complex surgical resection specimens, including transplant specimens. The Department currently receives approximately 11,000 GI biopsies; 1500 GI, pancreas and liver resection specimens; 350 liver biopsies and 500 fine needle aspiration aspirations from the GI tract, pancreas and liver. These specimens include both adult and pediatric specimens. The fellow’s education is enhanced by the strong interdisciplinary approach to patient care including pathology, gastroenterology, radiology, surgery, oncology and radiation oncology.
The fellow’s responsibilities include slide review and preparation of selected reports, presentation at interdepartmental conferences and teaching and supervision of pathology residents. Training also includes elective. The fellow is encouraged to participate in a scholarly project during the year culminating in presentation at a meeting and/or publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
