T32 Training of Surgeon Scientists in Basic and Translational Research

This training opportunity is funded by the National Cancer Institute T32 Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award. Our program is dedicated to training the surgical resident in basic and translational research. Our goal is to develop surgeon-scientists who will go into oncologic specialties of surgery.

A critical feature of this program is the requirement of at least one 1st author publication in a peer reviewed journal from the research performed during the fellowship. In addition, our trainees will be assigned a surgical faculty advisor. Monthly and quarterly meetings with these advisors will inform the T32 fellow on pathways to a successful career as a combined surgeon, researcher, and educator. Along with your laboratory experience, you research mentor and surgical faculty advisor will guide you during and after the fellowship to achieve your professional goals as a surgical-scientist.

The training program will consist of two years of intense laboratory research, formal coursework, journal clubs, seminars, and the Department of Surgery Annual Research Day Trainees spend two years working with their research mentor in basic and translational research which will ultimately lead to publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
