MRI Fellowship

MRI Fellowship

The MRI Fellowship Program at at UMass Medical School provides comprehensive training in MRI and in the diseases affecting the nervous system, abdomen, chest and musculoskeletal systems, both in adult and pediatric patients. This is one of the few fellowships in the nation to offer MRI experience across all subspecialties. The goals of fellowship are twofold:

  1. a broad exposure to the use of MRI in different subspecialties.
  2. to provide knowledge of clinical MRI physics.

UMass Memorial Medical Center (UMMMC) is a 781-bed tertiary care hospital and the major teaching hospital for UMass Medical School. UMMMC is Worcester County’s only Level I trauma center, comprehensive stroke center and the referral center for central New England. The Department of Radiology at UMass Memorial Medical Center performs over 1 million studies per year, across five hospitals and an outpatient imaging center. Current faculty in the department include 65+ fellowship trained Radiologists. The department has an enterprise wide PACS system (AGFA), as well as EPIC EMR. The hospital campuses and outpatient imaging center have 8 MRIs (including a GE Pioneer 3T system) and perform over 50,000 MR examinations in a year.

Fellows are expected to acquire a broad base of knowledge, develop clinical acumen, and learn protocols and consultation skills. Fellows will work with experienced radiologists in the subspecialties and take advantage of opportunities to develop their skills. In the early part of the training, fellows will work under supervision but will progressively be given independent roles though they will continue to get their cases signed-off on by the faculty.
