Public Psychiatry Fellowship at ZSFG

In 2011, the UCSF Department of Psychiatry at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) partnered with the San Francisco Health Network Behavioral Health Services (SFHN-BHS) within the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) to develop this one-year fellowship. Funded primarily through the support of SFHN-BHS, this fellowship offers both clinical experience in a community setting and an opportunity to build and develop a knowledge-base specific to Public Psychiatry.

Fellows in this program are strongly committed to the role of psychiatrists as physicians caring for people with severe mental illness. As such, they spend four days a week delivering clinical care within a SFHN-BHS or SFHN-BHS-affiliated community mental health program in San Francisco County. One day a week, the fellows meet with the Fellowship Directors for didactics, case-based learning seminars, and supervision at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. During these Wednesday didactics, fellows learn about the history and organizational structure of public psychiatry, recovery, evidence-based psychosocial rehabilitation models, management, forensic topics, integration of care, homelessness, and advocacy.

Prerequisites:

Applicants must have completed a general adult residency in psychiatry and by the time the fellowship begins, must have a California medical license. Please include a photocopy of your California Medical License (required for training). If you do not have a California Medical License, include a statement affirming your eligibility for the license. Please note: it can take up to 6 months to process an application for a California Medical License.

Applicants must either be a US citizen or hold an appropriate visa. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept applications from candidates holding ECFMG-J1 visas or H-1 visas. Fellows will be selected from applicants whose achievements reflect a strong desire to advance the work of public psychiatry in caring for those with complex mental health disorders and an interest in integrating mental health and primary care. Minority applicants are especially encouraged to apply.

International Medical Graduate Applicants: You must have a California medical license at the start of the fellowship program. The process for obtaining a California medical license can be lengthy - we strongly recommend starting the process as early as possible.

We cannot provide visa assistance to applicants. After reviewing this information, we will arrange interviews. A complete set of training documents will be requested prior to final acceptance.
