Breast Imaging Fellowship

We are currently accepting applications for the 2021-2022 position. The one-year fellowship accepts one fellow per year.

The Department of Radiology offers a one-year fellowship in Breast Imaging through the University of Illinois College of Medicine at the OSF Saint Francis Center for Breast Health, formerly known as the Susan G. Komen Breast Center.

Approximately 22,000 screening cases are evaluated and 9,000 diagnostic studies are performed each year at the OSF Saint Francis Center for Breast Health. In addition, over 2,500 interventional procedures as well as 6,000 breast ultrasound examinations, over 450 breast MRI exams and over 150 MR-guided core biopsies are performed each year.

The fellowship is through the University of Illinois College of Medicine, the OSF Saint Francis Center for Breast Health, and OSF HealthCare St. Francis Medical Center, a 600+ bed Level I Trauma Center. It is staffed by five Breast Imaging Radiologists and a dedicated group of technologists and clerical staff. Additionally, there are three dedicated Nurse Navigators and a genetics specialist who runs the High Risk Assessment Program. The facilities include the OSF Saint Francis Center for Breast Health and three outlying screening sites which together have seven full-field digital Hologic Dimensions 3D Mammography Units. R2 ImageChecker CAD is used for all screening and diagnostic exams.

In addition, the OSF Saint Francis Center for Breast Health is equipped with two dedicated Philips iU22 ultrasound units, two Philips EPIQ 5G Affirm prone ultrasound units, a Hologic stereotactic unit with the Brevera biopsy specimen imaging system, a Hologic Affirm upright stereotactic biopsy unit, a GE Signa HDx 1.5 T MRI system with Sentinelle Vanguard Breast MR Auxiliary Table and Suros Eviva breast biopsy system, and a Hologic Horizon A bone densitometry unit. The mammography department at OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center is also equipped with a dedicated Philips iU22 ultrasound unit for additional procedures and diagnostic exams performed at that facility.

The Center for Breast Health has earned the ACR Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence (BICOE) accreditation. The Center is accredited by the National Accreditation Program of Breast Centers (NAPBC) and was one of the first four programs in the country to receive full accreditation.

For 2021-2022, we are participating in the Breast Imaging Fellowship Match, sponsored by the Society of Breast Imaging and managed by the National Resident Matching Program. In order to become a fellow at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria, you must register with the Radiology Match, of which Breast Imaging is a part.
