General Internal Medicine Fellowship

The Division of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Icahn School of Medicine offers a two-year fellowship designed to prepare clinicians for careers in clinical and health services research. The general medicine fellowship strives to prepare fellows for the transition from resident to academic faculty. The curriculum includes formal coursework towards the completion of either a degree in Masters of Public Health or Masters in Clinical Research. Fellows are actively involved in mentored research projects, division-wide research meetings, and graduate school research seminars and journal clubs. In addition to formal coursework and research mentorship, the fellowship includes development of teaching skills, participation in faculty development conferences and continued development of clinical skills.

Fellows work alongside research and education faculty within our Division and often collaborate with other research faculty throughout the institution. Areas of research expertise in our Division include: health disparities, chronic disease self-management, primary care of aging populations, health care for homebound adults, comparative effectiveness research, and health policy, often in the context of asthma, COPD, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, HIV or hepatitis C. We collaborate extensively across departments at Mount Sinai enabling research and mentorship in many other disciplines as well. Education training focuses on development of curricula and educational innovations for residents in ambulatory care, and trainees develop research skills to measure the impact of their projects.

A strength of the program is the breadth and depth of research interests held by the many established researchers at Mount Sinai and the tradition of collaboration across divisions and departments that creates abundant opportunities for mentored clinical research. With the support of faculty mentors, fellows are expected to design, implement and complete several research projects and present their findings through publication in peer-reviewed journals, abstract presentations, and oral presentations at regional and national conferences.

How To Apply:

This is a non-ACGME program.

We accept applications in a rolling fashion in the fall-winter preceding the fellowship start date (July 1 of each year). To apply, send or e-mail:

1. A cover letter describing yourself and your interests in general internal medicine fellowship training;
2. Your curriculum vitae;
3. Information about your citizenship and/or visa status.

Three letters of recommendation will be required after the initial screening process, though these can be sent initially if desired. Letters of recommendation should be from faculty members who are familiar with the applicant's qualifications. One of these letters must be from the director of the current or most recent clinical training program.
