Surgical Simulation and Education Research Fellowship

Surgical Simulation and Education Research Fellowship

The Surgical Simulation and Education Research Fellowship at UTMB is a two-year fellowship program accredited through the American College of Surgeons Accredited Education Institutes (ACS-AEI). This is a paid on-site position through UTMB’s Department of Surgery simulation center known as the Sealy & Smith Laboratory for Surgical Training, Assessment and Research (LSTAR).

Goals for this fellowship include developing and training residents for successful careers as surgeon educators and educational leaders, providing skills and knowledge to serve as future leaders in simulation and directors of simulation centers, producing and disseminating high-impact research in the field of surgical education and simulation, and equipping trainees with the expertise to develop and acquire funding for projects involving simulation-based surgical training.

The fellowship has a robust curriculum including weekly educational conferences, monthly educational workshops through the School of Medicine, mentoring with surgical and other scholarly faculty, contributing to resident and medical school activities, and attendance in local, regional, and national educational conferences. Fellows will enroll in the Association of Surgical Education Surgical Education Research Fellowship (ASE SERF) program and apply for the UTMB Scholars in Education course, a 21-month interdisciplinary program inspiring educators to become scholars, leaders, and innovators in their fields. Candidates must have completed at least two years of clinical training in surgery.
