Surgical Pathology Fellowship

Surgical Pathology Fellowship

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences offers a one-year fellowship program in diagnostic surgical pathology. The UAMS Medical Center is the major tertiary referral center for the state of Arkansas. It provides experience in a broad spectrum of diseases through the varying clinical subspecialties. The fellowship provides a broad experience in diagnostic surgical pathology with an emphasis in general pathology, oncologic pathology, gynecologic pathology, head and neck pathology and gastrointestinal and liver pathology.

Fellowship Director: Charles M. Quick, M.D. ([email protected])

The surgical pathology fellowship is divided into 2 halves with graduated levels of responsibility throughout the year. During the first four months, the fellows focus on general surgical and oncologic pathology. Duties include sign out of in-house cases, frozen section interpretation and review of external material and attending personal consults. Sign out duties during the first half of the year are limited to 4 weeks and will have 100% faculty re-review following sign-out.

During the second half of the fellowship fellows may elect to focus their studies in up to two areas of emphasis, which currently consist of:

  • Gynecologic pathology
  • Gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary pathology
  • Head and neck pathology

Each area of concentrated study lasts 3 months. Successful completion of the curriculum in each area allows for the modification of the title of the fellowship as listed on the fellows CV, for example, “Fellow in Surgical Pathology with emphasis in Gynecologic and Gastrointestinal Pathology.” Study in an area of emphasis is optional.

Optional electives in other areas (cytology, dermatopathology, etc) will be considered on a case by case basis and availability.
