Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

One (1) position available for Academic Year 2023-2024.

The Department of Surgery at LSU Health Shreveport offers a 1-year ACGME-accredited fellowship in Surgical Critical Care to train the next generation of Trauma Surgeons and Surgical Critical Care Intensivists. While the program is in its early stages, the core faculty are heavily invested in education and evidence-based care of critically ill patients.

The system's Academic Medical Center is a 407-bed tertiary referral center serving northern Louisiana, northeast Texas, and south Arkansas. The facility contains the only American College of Surgeons verified Level 1 adult and Level 2 pediatric Trauma Center in north Louisiana and serves a large catchment area, as the closest trauma centers with a level 1 designation are in Dallas, TX (185 mi) to the west; Little Rock, AR to the north (215 mi); Jackson, MS (225 mi) to the east; and New Orleans, LA (310 mi) to the south. The center is clinically very busy with 3,400 trauma activations, 2,600+ trauma admissions, and 25% penetrating trauma in the last academic year.

Rotations in the Trauma, Surgical, and Neurosurgical ICUs are complemented by electives offered in Medical ICU, Burn, Echo, ECLS (CRRT, ECMO), Interventional Radiology, and/or Vascular Surgery. People, interests, and future career arrangements vary widely, and our goal is to provide a superb education in the care of complex critically ill patients while maintaining flexibility to best serve our prospective fellows in meeting their career goals. If the available elective rotations do not include an experience felt to be of value, our goal is to expand our offerings to meet the needs and interests of our fellows.

As the only fellowship in the Department of Surgery at this institution, the opportunity for clinical experience, growth, and autonomy is exceptional.
