General Surgery Residency - Categorical Position

The General Surgery Residency Program at The University of Tennessee HSC (UTHSC) is a five-year ACGME-accredited training program located in Memphis, TN. Our residents learn and care for patients at affiliated hospitals which include large academic hospitals, a regional trauma center, a freestanding children’s hospital and smaller community-based hospitals.

The services at each hospital range from large multidisciplinary teams to individual residents with specific surgical attendings. We provide ample educational opportunities for a resident who wants to learn in diverse settings and treat a diverse population.

The UTHSC Surgery Residency Program has one (1) opening in the categorical General Surgery training program at the PGY – 3 level to start July 1, 2023.

Prerequisites:

US clinical training in an ACGME accredited general surgery residency training program. Resident must be in good standing.

Visa Status

Visa status for international Medical Graduates must fall within the following categories:

  1. Eligible to seek J-1 visa
  2. Permanent Resident or Alien status (i.e. "greencard")
  3. In accordance with UT GME guidelines, this program does not sponsor residents for "H" type visas.

  4. Dean’s Letter (MSPE)
  5. USMLE Steps 1, 2 & 3
  6. Three (3) Letters of Recommendations. Prior to any final decision to offer a position, a letter from the current Program Director showing good academic standing will be required
  7. Competency based evaluations for ALL completed rotations
  8. Rotation schedule from PGY 1 & PGY 2 years
  9. Current ACGME case log
  10. All ABSITE Scores
  11. Current ATLS, BLS, ACLS certifications
