Sports Medicine (Family Medicine) Fellowship

Our mission is to advance sports medicine through the training of future leaders in the field. Our vision is to train primary care physicians to become competent practitioners engaged in the diagnosis and management of athletes and active people of all ages with issues related to sport and physical activity.

The fellowship is primarily a one-on-one learning experience. The program has six longitudinal block rotations allowing for both continuity as well as diversity. During each rotation, the fellow will gain experiences in sports medicine, orthopaedics, Division I athletics and family medicine. Each fellow also will have required experiences with sports radiology, sports cardiology/physiology, and physical therapy. Furthermore, academic endeavors are expected and supported through national and local conferences, individual mentoring and local workshops.

There are three weekly conferences that the fellow is expected to attend. These conferences will feature traditional didactic lectures, Certificates of Added Qualification board preparation, journal club and ultrasound (didactic and practical).

Prerequisites:

Medical Licensing Examination:
All applicants must successfully complete the United States Medical Licensing Examination or Comprehensive Medical Licensing Examination Steps 1 and 2 prior to the start of the program. It is encouraged that the incoming fellow also completes USMLE or COMLEX Step 3 prior to starting, but this can be completed during the first six months of the program year.

Postgraduate Training:
There is postgraduate training required in the form of a successfully completed residency in family medicine.
