Ophthalmology Residency

Ophthalmology Residency

The Ophthalmology Residency program at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (D-H) provides residents with comprehensive training and education in the medical and surgical care of the eye and visual system. This is a new program! We received initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in April, 2019. We have been preparing for years and are excited to welcome our first residents in 2021.

We offer two four-year positions. Matched applicants will begin ophthalmology training at Dartmouth-Hitchcock in June 2021. All applications are due September 15, 2020.

Our residents participate in training at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon, NH, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction, VT, and Massachusetts Eye and Ear in Boston and Waltham, MA. Ours is a small program within a busy academic medical center that hosts residents and fellows in over 50 other specialties; incoming trainees will be joining a large community of peers training throughout the medical center. There is a well-established institutional infrastructure for resident support.

The DHMC faculty consists of eight fellowship-trained ophthalmologists, two optometrists, and two orthoptists. All major clinical sub-specialties are represented including vitreoretinal, glaucoma, cornea, uveitis, oculoplastics, pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, neuro-ophthalmology, and refractive surgery. There is no private practice at Dartmouth-Hitchcock; all physicians are clinic employed.

Residents have their own resident clinic within the DHMC Eye Clinic, immediately adjacent to faculty clinics, which allows close supervision and easy consultation. There is a graded responsibility structure, which allows residents to gain progressive competence and responsibility in patient evaluation and medical/surgical management over their three years of training.

DHMC has no ophthalmology fellows competing for cases.
