The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship selects one applicant per year to fulfill its position, which is fully accredited through the ACGME.
Since its inception in 1998, all critical care fellowship graduates who have taken the Surgical Critical Care Boards have passed. In addition, the surgical critical-care residents that have all desired to pursue a career in pediatric surgery have matched into ACGME-accredited pediatric surgery fellowships.
The surgical critical care fellow participates in the research endeavors of the Department of Surgery, including multiple research projects in pediatric and neonatal critical care.

The application process for the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Children's Mercy Kansas City is performed outside the match.
Applications are accepted by contacting either the program director and director, Surgical Critical Care Services, David Juang, MD, or Danelle Vogt, MBA. In general, the position is filled from the pool of applicants that do not match in pediatric surgery and are endeavoring to expand their exposure to pediatric surgery, as well as their clinical and academic background in order to strengthen their position for the match in pediatric surgery.
